Check out some tips for the holiday season with no surprises on the road
MDS, the largest manufacturer of brake discs and drums in Latin America, provides the market with a product that simply cannot let you down, at any time, and especially during the end-of-the-year holidays, holidays and vacations. To avoid any unpleasant surprises on the road, MDS offers some tips for a safe trip, especially when it comes to brakes.
Maintaining the brake system is a required item on any holiday checklist. Based on data on the fleet of millions of cars that circulate daily in Brazil, the most common part replacements in vehicles are brake pads and discs. The state of the discs, as well as the level of brake fluid, must be checked every 10,000 km. The discs and brake pads need to be within the minimum thickness, so be attentive.
Using worn-out brake pads not only impairs braking efficiency, but also wears out brake discs, which becomes costly as they will need to be replaced. In the case of drum brakes, in addition to the regulation, the most common repair is aligning the lining and rebuilding the drums.
"A poorly regulated brake with overdue maintenance causes accidents that should never have happened," says MDS product manager Mauricio Gava.
Another way to check for brake defects or problems is by looking at the opening of the disc to inspect the caliper, evaluating how much material is left on the brake pads. Disc brake pads must be replaced when they reach a useful thickness of less than 5mm and should be inspected every 15,000 km.
Leaks are among the main defects of any brake system. Check for fluid marks near the wheels where the car is parked. Also, check if the back part of the brake is stained with fluid, which isa sign of failure and can cause accidents.
The driver can also contribute to the durability of the brake components. Proper use of the engine to reduce speed, avoiding aggressive driving in traffic (with constant and abrupt braking) and stepping on the brake smoothly and progressively, are tips that everyone can follow daily to increase the life of the brake system, not to mention improving the traffic.
Check out some MDS tips for taking care of your brake system to ensure a safe and peaceful trip during the holiday season:
- Check the brake fluid every 30 to 60 days.
- Replace the brake fluid every year or 10,000 km.
- Check the state of the brake pads every 15,000 km.
- The pads need to be changed when they reach a useful thickness of less than 5 mm.
- Do not load the vehicle above its capacity as specified by the manufacturer.
- Do not alter the original characteristics of the vehicle, such as the suspension.
- Do not modify the brakes, such as replacing one component with another with different characteristics.
